Should New Zealand change its flag?

New Zealand’s current flag is so similar to so many other countries. When anyone sees a Canadian or Swiss flag there are no um’s or ar’s as to what country it is from. This is just one reason why this topic needs to be talked about. You can read some more reasons on the official support site.

At Design Assembly last week Paul Newfield gave a thought provoking presentation and detailed history about this topic. If you heard it, you would agree that how our current flag came about is nothing to be proud of. To cut a long story short, it was kind of like “… oh, we need a flag… no one could decide so they used the one we have now”.

We are posting about this because we want to help those behind this topic/movement gain some attention and also make you think a little about our national identity. So many of us wear this identity on our chest in the form of a kiwi, nz map or Mr 4square, but you don’t see people with the nz flag on their chest…. why not?

Te team behind the campaign are really keen to get the local design community engaged to help stimulate a national conversation about choosing a new New Zealand flag.  What are some cheap (ideally free!) ways we can go about getting this issue into the broader consciousness – viral campaigns, blogs, youtube videos, social networking?  If you’ve got a great idea, please get in touch via campaignmanager@nzflag.com.  The nzflag.com website could also do with a refresh, so any web designers or developers who’d like to support the cause should also drop them an email.

Join the discussion by joining the New Zealand Flag Facebook Group (already 2342 members).

I wonder what the members of [business:made-from-new-zealand] think?

ASKEW, Soho hole and Design Assembly

Last night was yet another successful design assembly put together by Louise Kellerman.

The speakers were so passionate about their topics, but the highlight for us was listening to ASKEW and the story about his life and in particular the soho hole in Ponsonby Auckland.

The soho hole was given a new life by ASKEW, see the full story at TMDcrew. We wish we went to the pool party. We hope it really does become a swimming pool.

Show off your work space

Found via McCoyDigital tweets. A fun uk site to share your work space. Richard McCoy’s Whaiheke Island space is the one featured below. Mine below that…

Cactus purchased on the launch day of endemicworld, a lamp to work late without using all the lights in the building, a big screen and mac keyboard & mouse are essential (I spend more time here than anywhere else), tunes underfoot, speakers on officemax catalogue to make the bass go smooth, water, fruit…

Make your workspace nice so you like to go to work and use it, you will be more productive and ultimately have more fun.

Show us your workspace, post a comment with a link to your flickr or twitpic or whatever you use for pic sharing.

Country of nice, according to Teej

This blog plugged the Kinoo t-shirts the other day. They talk about the word ‘nice’ being a synonym for New Zealand, the country of niceness. Its pretty funny and worth reading.
