A Herman Miller Chair That ‘Embodies’ Your Work Lifestyle
Leave it to office design and modern furniture innovators, Herman Miller, to come up with a new office chair that blows all other office chairs completely out of the water. The Herman Miller Embody Chair is designed for the worker who spends 6 – 8 hours a day sitting at a desk in front of a computer. Combining the ultimate in comfort and the latest in office chair technology, the Embody Chair is definitely the chair to have.
- Design History: The Embody Chair was designed to be more than just an office chair. It was designed, not only to reduce back strain and discomfort but to positively impact the life of the sitter. Initially a collaboration between Jeff Weber and Bill Stumpf, Stumpf passed away in 2006, leaving Weber to carry torch, building off of Stumpf’s inspiration.

- The Embody Chair was most certainly designed with office workers in mind. According to Weber on Herman Miller’s website, “We identify with the problems people have as a result of sitting and we identify with their need to produce ideas.” Throughout the development of Embody, over 30 professionals including physicians and experts in biomechanics, vision, physical therapy and ergonomics collaborated in the development of the first “health-positive” chair.
A Healthier Chair: Embody Chairs feature a new tilt technology, encouraging the body to move naturally. Whether you lean forward or lean back, your lower back remains supported with no adjustments necessary. This consistent support is good for people of all body types, allowing users to assume a comfortable and healthy reclining position. Additionally, the Embody Chair encourages the working recline posture, which reduces compression of the spine and slows fluid loss from the discs. Not only that, but while in this position, your head stays in line with your computer monitor. A narrow backrest allows for more free and easy movement of the arms.
Natural Support: Mimicking the spine, the back of the Embody Chair adapts to the shape and movement of your spine, automatically adjusting to shifting positions – giving you adequate support throughout the day. Backfit adjustment technology allows the user to achieve a neutral and balanced posture while sitting in front of a computer.
A matrix of pixels on both the seat and back automatically conform to your every movement, helping to distribute weight evenly. Additionally, by fitting each user so perfectly, the chair reduces seated pressure which helps to increase blood circulation, therefore decreasing heart rate.
Form & Function: Herman Miller has a knack for creating furniture that seamlessly blends form and function in a way that’s both aesthetically pleasing, and ergonomically designed. The Embody Chair leaves nothing to the imagination, showcasing the technology when viewed from the back. When looked at from the front, you see organic shapes, contours and lines. Optional textiles are designed to enhance the look of the chair, acting more like a second skin. Additionally, the Embody Chair is Greenguard certified, contains no harmful PVCs and is 95 percent recyclable.
While visually, the chair’s skeletal frame may look a bit strange, sit in the chair for a few hours and you’ll be able to see what all the hype is about. Designed for the office, the Embody Chair allows you to bring healthy living from home to your work space.
