The New Dowse in Lower Hutt always has some very interesting exhibitions. Having received their newsletter this morning this one was our pick. The Bouncy Marae Weekend.

Can someone make a bouncy boat? I reckon it would loose to have a party on a party boat thats made out of bouncy. Imagine the mad moves you could pull on the dance floor… drinking could be tricky.

All Modern – Herman Miller Chair

A Herman Miller Chair That ‘Embodies’ Your Work Lifestyle

Leave it to office design and modern furniture innovators, Herman Miller, to come up with a new office chair that blows all other office chairs completely out of the water. The Herman Miller Embody Chair is designed for the worker who spends 6 – 8 hours a day sitting at a desk in front of a computer. Combining the ultimate in comfort and the latest in office chair technology, the Embody Chair is definitely the chair to have.

Design History: The Embody Chair was designed to be more than just an office chair. It was designed, not only to reduce back strain and discomfort but to positively impact the life of the sitter. Initially a collaboration between Jeff Weber and Bill Stumpf, Stumpf passed away in 2006, leaving Weber to carry torch, building off of Stumpf’s inspiration.

The Embody Chair was most certainly designed with office workers in mind. According to Weber on Herman Miller’s website, “We identify with the problems people have as a result of sitting and we identify with their need to produce ideas.” Throughout the development of Embody, over 30 professionals including physicians and experts in biomechanics, vision, physical therapy and ergonomics collaborated in the development of the first “health-positive” chair.

A Healthier Chair: Embody Chairs feature a new tilt technology, encouraging the body to move naturally. Whether you lean forward or lean back, your lower back remains supported with no adjustments necessary. This consistent support is good for people of all body types, allowing users to assume a comfortable and healthy reclining position. Additionally, the Embody Chair encourages the working recline posture, which reduces compression of the spine and slows fluid loss from the discs. Not only that, but while in this position, your head stays in line with your computer monitor. A narrow backrest allows for more free and easy movement of the arms.

Natural Support: Mimicking the spine, the back of the Embody Chair adapts to the shape and movement of your spine, automatically adjusting to shifting positions – giving you adequate support throughout the day. Backfit adjustment technology allows the user to achieve a neutral and balanced posture while sitting in front of a computer. Read the rest of this entry »

Should New Zealand change its flag?

New Zealand’s current flag is so similar to so many other countries. When anyone sees a Canadian or Swiss flag there are no um’s or ar’s as to what country it is from. This is just one reason why this topic needs to be talked about. You can read some more reasons on the official support site.

At Design Assembly last week Paul Newfield gave a thought provoking presentation and detailed history about this topic. If you heard it, you would agree that how our current flag came about is nothing to be proud of. To cut a long story short, it was kind of like “… oh, we need a flag… no one could decide so they used the one we have now”.

We are posting about this because we want to help those behind this topic/movement gain some attention and also make you think a little about our national identity. So many of us wear this identity on our chest in the form of a kiwi, nz map or Mr 4square, but you don’t see people with the nz flag on their chest…. why not?

Te team behind the campaign are really keen to get the local design community engaged to help stimulate a national conversation about choosing a new New Zealand flag.  What are some cheap (ideally free!) ways we can go about getting this issue into the broader consciousness – viral campaigns, blogs, youtube videos, social networking?  If you’ve got a great idea, please get in touch via campaignmanager@nzflag.com.  The nzflag.com website could also do with a refresh, so any web designers or developers who’d like to support the cause should also drop them an email.

Join the discussion by joining the New Zealand Flag Facebook Group (already 2342 members).

I wonder what the members of [business:made-from-new-zealand] think?

Trend Magazines… from Hawaii

There are a tonne of trend watching/style blogs and mags on the web. Too many to talk about in a single blog post. Today we discovered Hipsterist,  and it deserves a look. We particularly like the simple fresh navigation and design. The fact it is published out of Hawaii is cool too.

Favourite post we found was the bamboo skater. Big ups and nice one hipsterist crew… and Hawaii

ASKEW, Soho hole and Design Assembly

Last night was yet another successful design assembly put together by Louise Kellerman.

The speakers were so passionate about their topics, but the highlight for us was listening to ASKEW and the story about his life and in particular the soho hole in Ponsonby Auckland.

The soho hole was given a new life by ASKEW, see the full story at TMDcrew. We wish we went to the pool party. We hope it really does become a swimming pool.
